Welcome to Cedar Springs and the Cedar Springs Band Department!
We are very excited that your child has decided to join band at Cedar Springs. As a student enters 6th Grade and high school, many changes happen, and being part of the band program will make the transition seem less complicated and maybe even more exciting. As we begin the new school year we would like to take this time to introduce some of the unique aspects to being a member of the instrumental music community at Cedar Springs Public Schools.
Benefits of Band
Everything in band is a microcosm of what the kids will see in the next phases of life. What we do is have an opportunity to partner with you, longer than a semester…we’re going to see your kids for multiple years, and we have the opportunity to teach them critical skills they’re going to need when they move forward.
- Hard work
- Social skills
- Problem solving
That’s what we do, because we know you’re not going to work in your own bubble in the future. You are going to work as a part of a team. If the first time you come up with conflict on a team is when you’re fresh out of college and you’ve got your big fancy job and all of a sudden, you’re on a team with someone you don’t agree with. What are you going to do? Now we don’t expect you’re going to remember “my band director taught me…” But, you’ll default back to “where can we find common ground? Have I taken the time to figure out where they’re coming from?” Alternatively, when you’re in your first difficult class in undergrad and while everyone else’s eyes are glazed over, you’re sitting there “I have to read this many pages a night…I learned to memorize stuff in marching band…” and just start putting one foot in front of another.
You can find information here on this website, cedarspringsbands.com. Weekly information (This Week In Band – TWIB) is pushed to the band through email, Band App, and under Latest News. The calendar is another great resources and offers a subscription feature to integrate with your calendars.
Being part of it all.
The Music Boosters are a fantastic organization that supports our students and their effort to become better students and citizens. The Music Boosters actually consists of every parent with a student in the Cedar Springs Bands and Choirs, so congratulations! You are a Music Booster! Please plan on attending future Music Booster meetings to learn what is going on in your child’s classroom. You meet many other band and choir parents and discover many ways to support your child.
We encourage every parent to become involved with the band program. We would not be the program we are without parental support! Students benefit and learn from parents who volunteer and attend meetings and concerts.
